Senator McConnell Has Inverted the Process of Democratic Discussion by Telling His Base of American Business to Stay Out of Politics

Senator McConnell’s lecturing of American business to stay out of politics was hastily followed by his statement he was not talking about contributions. That lecture represented a reversal of normal political dialogue. In a democracy it is the voters who tell the office holders what they need and what they want. It is not the office holders who instruct the voters as to what they’re allowed to do. Under the First Amendment as declared by the US Supreme Court on several occasions, corporations have a right to express political opinions. Efforts to reduce the vote is among the most important subjects for public discussion.

There’s something more important about what McConnell did. He took an axe to the republican base.

For a number of years the republican hierarchy has been trying to manage a joining of American business with right-wing groups, some of them with extreme positions. It has been effective at times. But the recent praise by Senator Johnson of Wisconsin, lavished on the rioters who took over the nation’s capitol have called into question the future of the republican party. I think we need two parties. However, if reduction of voting is the only way the republicans can win, our democratic form of government is directly threatened.

There’s a second issue which is the well documented and often commented on 20 year trend of the republican leadership to heap hate and attacks on anyone that opposes them. This imagining of evils has led to people like the famous evangelical leader Reverend Rick Joyner, who has called on Christians to arm themselves for an inevitable civil war against liberals, whom he suggests are “allies of the devil.” Hate groups are expanding at an alarming rate to the point where vowed revolutionaries are given a public forum.

Finally, it is difficult for many of us to believe what is true: That there are United States Senators who will undermine democracy so that one person will not call them a name. It takes a lot more courage than that to be a U.S. Senator.

As I said yesterday, it is often the case that the American establishment has to rise up to defend our democratic form of government. Many businesses and large law firms did that this week in their advertisement supporting voting which appeared in the New York Times.
